The challenges imposed by competing demands between growing urban populations and agricultural needs, further impacted by the complications from of climate changes and our improved understanding of “emerging” groundwater contaminants, creates the necessity and opportunity for creative solutions to water supply development and management. In California and other drought-impacted regions of the western United States, a new aggressive statutory and regulatory framework for water-supply sustainability requires a multi-disciplinary approach to solving these water resource challenges, via the incorporation of important elements such as the development of improved conceptual models for groundwater basins, low impact land development (LID) and conservation measures, storm runoff assessment and capture, and wastewater recycling.

Correctly understanding the distribution and the physical and chemical properties of aquifer systems is a critical element of our client’s needs regarding groundwater issues. Both water-supply management and contaminant-mitigation projects require a knowledge of the occurrence and flow characteristics of aquifers and aquitards. At Earth Consultants International (ECI), we integrate a wide variety of exploratory and analytical techniques to characterize aquifer systems and build defensible conceptual models for problem-solving. The best techniques for a given project are selected based on both our client’s objectives and the site’s geology. We approach aquifer characterization by first meeting with our clients and other stakeholders to clearly understand the objectives of the project, followed by careful review and compilation of the existing available information on the aquifer, groundwater basin and/or existing production well field. We then evaluate the reliability and quality of the available data, together with the timing and budgetary constraints defined by our client, to develop recommendations on how best to proceed with the project without “re-inventing the wheel.”

Techniques that we may apply depending on the project’s needs include:

Exploratory drilling (direct-push, rotary and/or CPT) and surface geophysical surveys to define and constrain the three-dimensional architecture of the groundwater basin under study, including any complex fault boundaries,

Borehole flowmeter and downhole geophysical investigations to characterize the aquifer stratigraphy, Q distribution, and improved understanding of contaminant transport pathways,
